2048
Merge tiles to reach 2048
2048 is a sliding tile puzzle game where you combine matching numbered tiles to reach the 2048 tile. Every swipe moves all tiles in one direction and a new tile (2 or 4) spawns. The game ends when the board is full with no possible merges.
How to Use
- 1Use arrow keys or swipe to slide all tiles in one direction
- 2Tiles with the same number merge when they collide
- 3A new tile appears after each move
- 4Reach the 2048 tile to win — or keep going for higher scores
A Weekend Project That Ate the Internet
Gabriele Cirulli, a 19-year-old Italian developer, built 2048 over a single weekend in March 2014 as a free, open-source riff on the games 1024 and Threes. It went viral within days, pulling millions of players in its first weeks, and Cirulli famously declined to monetize it heavily because he did not consider the concept original enough to profit from.
A detail most players never learn: every new tile that spawns is a 2 about 90% of the time and a 4 the remaining 10%. That spawn ratio is why patient setups beat greedy merges. The board fills more slowly than panic makes you think it does.
Because Cirulli released the code openly, thousands of clones and variants appeared within months, from 4D versions to ones using images instead of numbers. The version you are playing here keeps the original rules exactly: same grid, same spawn odds, same scoring.
Tile Milestones on the Way Up
| Highest Tile | What It Says |
|---|---|
| 256-512 | Casual play, merging without a plan |
| 1024 | Corner discipline forming |
| 2048 | The official win, strategy locked in |
| 4096-8192 | Strong player, very few wasted moves |
| 16384+ | Expert, near-perfect move efficiency |
The single most damaging move at any level is the desperation swipe away from your anchor corner. One bad direction can undo fifty good moves.
What is a Good Score?
Reaching the 2048 tile is the primary goal, achieved by roughly 1 in 3 casual players. Strong players reach 4096 or 8192. Theoretical maximum in a 4x4 grid is 131072.
Tips to Improve
- →Keep your highest tile in one corner and build toward it consistently
- →Avoid moving in the direction away from your high-tile corner
- →The "corner strategy" (snake pattern toward a corner) is the most reliable path to 2048
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 2048 solvable every time?
No. Some board states are unwinnable regardless of play. However, with good strategy (corner technique), you can reach 2048 in the majority of games.
What is the highest possible tile in 2048?
In a standard 4x4 grid, the theoretical maximum tile is 131072 (2^17). Reaching it requires near-perfect play throughout the entire game.
What happens after you reach the 2048 tile?
The game congratulates you but continues — you can keep merging tiles beyond 2048 to reach 4096, 8192, and higher. The game only ends when the board fills completely with no valid merges available, regardless of the highest tile you have reached.
Ninety percent of new tiles are 2s. Use that knowledge on the board above and push past your old best.
